SKI TAR (TO BE HEATED)
Ski Tar – properties and application guide
Properties of ski tar
Puijon Terva's Ski Tar is natural pine tar used especially for the care and waxing of wooden skis. It gives skis good glide and protects them from moisture.
✅ Natural and breathable – absorbs into the wood and protects it effectively.
✅ Water-resistant – prevents moisture absorption into the ski base.
✅ Improves glide – especially when used with kick wax.
✅ Extends ski lifespan – protects wood from cracking and wear.
✅ Provides a traditional tar scent – a pleasant feature for many users.
Puijon Terva's Ski Tar - roasted tar - is particularly useful for grip-base skis and traditional wooden backcountry skis used on natural snow.
Ski tar application guide
1. Preparation
- Clean the skis – Remove old tar, dirt, and any wax residue.
- Heat the skis – The skis should be at least room temperature, but they can also be placed briefly in an oven at 50–70°C or heated with a heat gun. Heat opens the wood pores and aids tar absorption.
2. Tar application
- Heat the tar – You can heat the tar jar in a warm water bath, for example, to make it more fluid.
- Apply the tar – Use a brush, rag, or sponge. Apply the tar thinly and evenly to the ski base.
- Lightly heat – You can use an oven, waxing iron, or heat gun to aid tar absorption. Do not overheat, so the tar does not boil.
- Allow to absorb – Leave the skis to dry for at least overnight.
3. Finishing
- Remove excess tar – Wipe the ski base with a cloth, leaving a thin and even layer.
- Polish the base – You can use a cork or brush to improve glide.
- Reapply if necessary – If the skis feel dry or you need more protection, add another thin layer and repeat the heating process.
Tips
🔥 Do not use excessive heat – the tar should absorb, not boil.
❄️ The base may remain sticky – if the skis are too sticky, you have used too much tar or have not removed the excess properly.
🪵 Tar storage – store the tar jar in a cool place.
Tarred skis withstand snow and moisture better. They perform best in traditional skiing styles and on soft snow.
