PINENE TURPENTINE (CONIFER TURPENTINE)

Pinene turpentine is a natural solvent obtained by distilling the resin of conifers, especially pine.

Properties:

  • Natural Solvent: Pinene turpentine is derived from renewable natural resources, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic solvents.
  • Effective Degreaser: Its grease-dissolving properties make it an excellent cleaner for various surfaces.
  • Pleasant Scent: Unlike many synthetic solvents, pinene turpentine has a natural, pleasant scent.

Uses:

  • Thinning Paints and Varnishes: Pinene turpentine is traditionally used for thinning oil-based paints and varnishes and for cleaning tools after painting.
  • As a Cleaning Agent: Due to its grease-dissolving properties, pinene turpentine is suitable for cleaning and degreasing various surfaces.
  • Production of Tar Paints: Puijon Terva produces highly absorbent and fast-drying tar paints. In these paints, pinene turpentine can act as a solvent or thinner, improving paint spreadability and drying time.

Advantages and Naturalness of Conifer Turpentine

Conifer turpentine, or pinene turpentine, is a natural solvent obtained by distilling the resin of conifers, especially pine. It is a traditional, biodegradable alternative to synthetic solvents such as mineral turpentine (petroleum-based turpentine).

Advantages:

Natural and Renewable
Conifer turpentine is made from a renewable raw material: tree resin. It is a more environmentally friendly option as it is not fossil-based and does not leave persistent harmful residues in nature.

Effective Solvent Properties
It is an effective remover of grease, tar, and oil-based substances. It is used, for example, for thinning paints and varnishes and for cleaning tools.

Pleasant Scent
Conifer turpentine has a natural, fresh, woody scent, unlike petroleum-based solvents, which smell strong and can irritate the respiratory tract.

Gentler on the Skin
Although conifer turpentine is a powerful solvent, it is not as irritating to the skin as many synthetic alternatives. However, prolonged skin contact should be avoided.

Biodegradable and Environmentally Friendly
Unlike petrochemicals, conifer turpentine degrades more easily in nature and does not accumulate in the environment. It is therefore a better option for the ecosystem.

Traditional Use and Versatility
Conifer turpentine has been used for centuries, for example, in:

  • Thinner for traditional tar paints and varnish paints
  • Wood treatment and protection
  • Ingredient in essential oils and natural cosmetics
  • Natural cleaning products
