SAUNA STAINS

Advantages, Features and Application of Alcohol-Based Sauna Stains

Advantages:

  1. Fast drying time – Alcohol-based stains evaporate quickly, resulting in fast drying.
  2. Deep penetration – Penetrates wood well and stains deeper, providing a long-lasting shade.
  3. Heat resistance – Does not form a film on the wood surface but soaks deep, making it resistant to temperature fluctuations in the sauna.
  4. Suitable for various wood surfaces – Works on both new and previously treated wood surfaces (oiled, varnished or waxed).
  5. Even tone – Provides a beautiful and even finish without blotches if applied correctly.

🔹 Features:

  • Alcohol-based composition evaporates quickly.
  • Does not form a surface layer but penetrates deep into the wood.
  • Available in various shades, but black is popular for modern and striking sauna interiors.
  • Often requires a protective topcoat, such as sauna wax or oil, to preserve the colour longer.

🖌️ Application:

  1. Preparation:
    • Clean the wood surface thoroughly from grease, dust and dirt.
    • If there is a previous treatment (e.g. varnish) on the surface, sand it off to ensure even stain absorption.
  2. Priming (if necessary):
    • If you want a very deep black colour, you can lightly treat the surface with a damp sponge before applying the stain.
    • Do a test swipe on a small area to ensure the desired result.
  3. Applying the stain:
    • Use a brush, sponge or lint-free cloth.
    • Apply a thin coat with long, even strokes along the wood grain.
    • Allow to penetrate for a few minutes and wipe off any excess stain for a softer finish.
  4. Drying and second coat:
    • Allow to dry completely (usually about 30 min – 1 h).
    • If you want a deeper shade, repeat the treatment 2–3 times.
  5. Finishing:
    • Protect the stained surface with sauna wax or oil to prolong colour retention and protect the wood from moisture.
    • Allow the final treatment to dry for at least 24 hours before using the sauna.

⚠️ Please note:

  • Good ventilation is important, as alcohol-based stains evaporate quickly and may have a strong odour.
  • After application, the sauna should be heated once to remove any volatile substances before use.
  • Do not apply too thick a coat to ensure even colour absorption and avoid blotching.

Alcohol-based black or oak-coloured sauna stain gives the sauna a modern, stylish look and withstands temperature fluctuations well. It is an excellent choice if you want a deep shade that does not form a film on the wood surface.
