SAUNA STAINS

Benefits, properties, and application of alcohol-based sauna stain

Benefits:

  1. Fast drying time – Alcohol-based (i.e., alcohol or ethanol-based) stain evaporates quickly, resulting in a fast drying time.
  2. Deep penetration – Penetrates wood well and stains deeper, providing a long-lasting shade.
  3. Heat resistance – Does not form a film on the wood surface but absorbs deeply, thus resisting temperature fluctuations in the sauna well.
  4. Suitable for various wood surfaces – Works on both new and previously treated wood surfaces (oiled, varnished, or waxed).
  5. Even tone – Provides a beautiful and even finish without streaks, if applied correctly.

🔹 Properties:

  • Alcohol-based formula evaporates quickly.
  • Does not form a surface layer, but absorbs deeply into the wood.
  • Available in various shades, but black is popular for modern and stylish sauna interiors.
  • Often requires a protective topcoat, such as sauna wax or oil, to preserve the color longer.

🖌️ Application:

  1. Preparation:
    • Clean the wood surface thoroughly from grease, dust, and dirt.
    • If the surface has a previous treatment (e.g., lacquer), sand it off to ensure even absorption of the stain.
  2. Priming (if necessary):
    • If you want a very deep black color, you can lightly wipe the surface with a damp sponge before applying the stain.
    • Do a test application on a small area to ensure the desired result.
  3. Stain application:
    • Use a brush, sponge, or lint-free cloth.
    • Apply a thin coat with long, even strokes in the direction of the wood grain.
    • Allow to absorb for a few minutes and wipe off any excess stain if you want a softer finish.
  4. Drying and second coat:
    • Allow to dry completely (usually about 30 min–1 hr).
    • If you want a deeper shade, repeat the treatment 2–3 times.
  5. Finishing:
    • Protect the stained surface with sauna wax or oil to make the color last longer and to keep the wood protected from moisture.
    • Allow the final treatment to dry for at least 24 hours before using the sauna.

⚠️ Important notes:

  • Good ventilation is important as alcohol-based stains evaporate quickly and can have a strong odor.
  • After application, the sauna should be heated once to remove any volatile substances before use.
  • Do not apply too thick a layer so that the color absorbs evenly and does not become streaky.

Alcohol-based black or oak-colored sauna stain gives a modern, stylish look to the sauna and withstands temperature fluctuations well. It is an excellent choice if you want a deep shade that does not form a film on the wood surface.
