LINSEED OIL

Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil – Properties and Applications

Cold-pressed linseed oil is a 100% natural, plant-based oil obtained by pressing flaxseeds without heating. This process preserves all of the oil's nutrients and chemical properties, making it a versatile substance for nutritional use, indoor wood treatment, and industrial applications.

🔹 Properties of Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil

100% natural and biodegradable – Contains no chemicals or additives.
Deep absorption – Penetrates porous materials such as wood and stone well.
Flexible and breathable surface – Does not form a hard film like varnish.
Water and dirt repellent – Protects surfaces from moisture, but allows them to breathe.
Long drying time (for raw linseed oil) – Can take several days to dry without drying agents.
Good chemical reactivity – Oxidizes and polymerizes to form a durable protective surface.

🔹 Applications of Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil

1. Wood Treatment and Protective Treatments 🌳

✔️ Oiling furniture – Provides natural protection and enhances wood grain patterns.
✔️ Floors and panels – Moisture-repellent yet breathable protection.
✔️ Wood art and instruments – Softens and protects wood without plastic or chemicals.

2. Thinning Paints and Varnishes 🎨

✔️ Thins linseed oil paints and natural oil paints, improving spreadability.
✔️ Used in varnish production to create a more absorbent surface treatment.

3. Metal and Leather Care 🛠️

✔️ Rust prevention – Linseed oil reacts with air to form a protective surface on metal.
✔️ Leather product care – Softens and protects leather without synthetic chemicals.

4. Art Painting and Icon Painting 🎨

✔️ Traditional binder for oil paints – Used in mixing pigments.
✔️ Natural varnish base – Provides gloss and protects the paint surface.

🔹 Benefits of Cold-Pressed Linseed Oil

1. Natural and Environmentally Friendly 🌱

✔️ Contains no toxins or chemical additives.
✔️ Fully biodegradable and safe to use.

2. Durable and Long-Lasting Protection 🏡

✔️ Penetrates deep and effectively protects wood.
✔️ Slows down wood drying and cracking.

3. Extends the lifespan of wood and metal

✔️ Protects against rust and moisture.
✔️ Slows down the greying of wood.

🔹 Linseed Oil Application

1. Surface preparation

✔️ The surface must be dry and clean before oil treatment.
✔️ Light sanding (grit 120–180) aids oil absorption.

2. Methods of application

✔️ Brush or rag – Rub the oil into the wood with circular motions.
✔️ Several thin coats – The first coat absorbs quickly, the second reinforces protection.
✔️ Remove excess oil after about 30 minutes to prevent the surface from becoming sticky.

3. Drying time and re-treatment

Drying time (for raw linseed oil):

  • Surface dry in 3–7 days.
  • Completely dry in up to 2–4 weeks.
  • When varnished (boiled) dries in 24–48 hours.

🛠 Re-treatment is recommended every 1–2 years, especially for outdoor use.

🔹 Disadvantages and precautions

⚠️ Long drying time – Raw linseed oil can take weeks to dry.
⚠️ Risk of spontaneous combustion – Rags soaked in linseed oil can spontaneously combust, so they must be disposed of safely (spread out to dry in a well-ventilated area or submerged in water).
⚠️ Does not form a protective film – Does not protect against scratches or mechanical wear like varnish.
